Now this is the most important part of planning the budgeting. It is the make or break part of the travel and planning. I have created a breakdown of the expenses I had from my 4 days and 3 nights HK and MACAU trip. I have divided the expenses into 6 categories namely (Airfare, Transportation, Food, Souvenirs and Extra expenses, Admission Tickets and Accommodation). All categories are as is except for the Food and Souvenirs as it is not the exact amount I spent but rather close estimation as I did not really jot down all expenses spent from the very last cent. You may notice that there is no category alloted for shopping, it is because I dont shop during my travel as It would impact my expenses and trying yo avoid too much stuff along with my big bacpack.
Round Trip Tickets Booked via AIRSIA
KUALA LUMPUR-HONG KONG – 159.50 MYR = 394.47
MACAU-KUALA LUMPUR – 532 MOP = 530 HKD
NOTES: AIRASIA being the best low cost carrier in ASIA is something I can really recommend. Just make sure you plan things ahead, meaning book your flight tickets ahead of time so you can get the lowest price guaranteed. Always check the website for ongoing promotions. I booked my round trip tickets 4 months before the actual trip so it was really cheap.
NGONG PING 360 (1 way crystal cabin/ 1 way standard cabin) – 190 HKD
Hong Kong Disneyland – 420 HKD
Hong Kong Ocean Park – 256 HKD
The Peak Tram and Sky Terrace – 90 HKD
Dragon Show in City of Dreams Hotel – 50 MOP/HKD
NOTES: This part right here is something you can control and and decide based on your intuition. Here’s a tip, mostly tickets bought over the counter will cost more rather than if you buy it from retailers. I bought all my tickets at Chine Travel Services at the HK Airport, the booth is just located at the arrival area along with the other Travel Services Booths. There are also hostels/hotel which offer discounted tickets that is of you are staying at the place itself. For example a ticket price of Disneyland at CTS is 420 HKD compare to the price over the counter which is 450 HKD.
Octopus Card Initial Load – 150HKD
Octopus Card Reload – 100 HKD
Ferry from HK to MACAU – 172 HKD
NOTES: Buying the Octopus card is the most convenient and cheap way of getting around HK as the card can be use in train, tram, ferry, bus and even in 711 stores to buy goods. It is a reloadable card that you just have to swipe and go similar to the EZ CARD use in Singapore. The 50 HKD is refundable once you surrender the card before you leave HK. However the price of the ferry from HK to MACAU varies on the what day and what time of the day and also depending if it is for Turbo Jet which faster or Cotai Jet for a slightly cheaper price but may take more than an hour.
ADULT – Price HK$150 representing a deposit* of HK$50 and an initial stored value of HK$100
**REFUND OF DEPOSIT FOR ON-LOAN OCTOPUS CARD– the deposit (less any use of NEGATIVE VALUE**) plus any remaining unused value is refundable at any time by handing in the card at the Customer Service Centre at any MTR Station or ticket office. Visitors leaving Hong Kong by air can hand the card in and obtain a refund at the Airport Express Customer Service Counters in the Arrival Hall at Terminal 1 and on the Airport Express Arrival Platform at Terminal 2 of Hong Kong International Airport. There is a small administration charge of HK$9 which is deducted from the balance in respect of cards which are returned within three months of date of issue.
NEGATIVE VALUE – If the balance on the card is positive (HK$1 or above) but insufficient to cover the cost of the next transaction the card can incur a negative value of up to HK$35 which is recovered the next time the card is reloaded. The card cannot be used for any further transaction once a negative balance has accumulated until the card has been reloaded.
3 NIGHTS STAY AT URBAN PACK HOSTEL – 630 HKD (210HKD per day)
NOTES: There are various options on how you choose and decide for the place of your stay. Personally I dont really mind this much as for me you only get to sleep on the bed and the rest of the day you will be out exploring the place, but still all depends on your personality as some may find comfort and luxury as there priority. Popular websites like AGODA,AIRBNB,HOSTELWORD,HOSTELBOOKERS,ASIAROOMS and many others are some of the online booking sites you can choose from. Make sure you go through the ratings and reviews on the website and use it as your basis for deciding. Tripadvisor is also another travel site if wanna found out more of the reviews from people who rated the hotel/hostels.
REF MAGNET, KEYCHAIN -250 HKD
NOTES: Most of the time if I am not mistaken the cheap things to buy are available in night markets or sometimes malls. Try to avoid buying from a much touristy place as prices can go double from it’s original price.
HK and MACAU (Day 1-4) – 750 HKD
-40-50 HKD budget per meal
NOTES: Food is the last thing you should worry about HK and MACAU as there arel several options to choose from depending on your budget and taste. At most the budget for decent food ranges from 40-60 HKD which may sometimes be a complete meal. Amongst the list and known cheap eats in HK are Cafe de Coral, MX, Yoshinoya, Austalian Dairy, Mcdonads, Food Republic and restos and stalls you can find in side streets which has more authentic appeal for taste.
